Making Judgements

Reading the article that talked about the four teenagers who committed suicide and the way adults referred to them was very unpleasant. Just because the boys and girls were not acting like how other teenagers were, was no need to be referred as any other names but their real names. These four people were look down on.  Basically the society in which these people lived in, the four teens were never accepted in. According to the article the teens were referred as “troubled losers”. Also even after they were died they still were being called names. This article relates to the chapter 3 “Culture” because the people who would call these teens’ names would make judgments on them. The reason why they made judgments is because according to the people from the society the teens were different than them. Since the teens would act a different way then what the people thought was desirable, the people felt the need to judge. I could say that I go to college and different places every day and I see people who are totally different then me but that does not give me the right to judge.
Reading chapter 3 “Culture” was very interesting to me since it defined everything that has to do with defining culture and elements of culture. What amazed me more are the two elements of culture.  In the world we live today I could say that there are a lot of people who do believe that having more than one house is better than having a great health. In my life my mom taught me to believe in nonmaterial culture.  Although later when I started to enter the teenage stage I started to see that I enjoyed the physical objects more than my mother’s beliefs. I could say that the reason why my mom is more into the nonmaterial culture is because she was born in Ecuador where you would see a lot of poor people.  Since I was born here in New York I really didn’t see what my mom saw when she was living in Ecuador.

A Survey Research,

Reading chapter 2 and reading the article “Association is not Causation” made me very open minded to how collecting data is very important. Before I thought that any person who had a degree can never be wrong when it comes to researching and gathering data. I believed that if someone conducted a research their results will be right and wouldn’t be wrong. In chapter 2, it discusses methods of collecting data the difference between how to collect data depending on what you are trying to prove. According to chapter 2 “Probably the most commonly used technique in sociology is the survey” (pg41). This relates to the article because the article contains evidence from a survey research. The article is about, if alcohol and drugs are the primary cause of violence. According to the article the survey they did, men who barely consume alcohol were more violent to men who did consume it.  The survey proves that drinking alcohol doesn’t automatically make a person violent. By this survey taking place it shows evidence that the theory can be wrong. In which alcohol is not to be blame for a person being violent. When I was 17 years old I attended a party and saw a guy hit his girlfriend, her boyfriend was drunk and I started to believe the theory that alcohol is the main reason a person becomes aggressive. Then with time I would see the news and hear more stories and even witness that not every violent action was done when a human being was intoxicated with alcohol. I believe alcohol is not to be fully blamed for when a person has a conflict with violence.

Who I Am

I'm Marilyn, a girl who is just living day by day and determine to accomplish her goals. The biggest influence in my life is my brother because he went to college and got his associates degree. My brother made me realize that although there are bills to pay around the house, education should not be put on pause. My mother also is an influence since she showed me never to give up, she made me want to be someone in life. My goal is to get my master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and also in Human Services. I feel like my purpose in life is to help children since some children in life need help because others left them alone. I feel like I also can help families that have a family member that caught a stroke or any health problem.  In my past, I have encounter a period of time that changed me and made me be the person I am today. In 2001 my dad caught a stroke and as a young child I had to move from New York. Being in a new school, new society and a new place to live was difficult for me. It was more difficult when people who surrounded us were not that nice. This event shaped me to see that the world never looks as what it seems. Today I see the world as just being there and we humans are what we determine the world would become for each person. Each day I see that my daily life is influence by my personal history, because if it was not, then my life today would be totally different.
