Making Judgements

Reading the article that talked about the four teenagers who committed suicide and the way adults referred to them was very unpleasant. Just because the boys and girls were not acting like how other teenagers were, was no need to be referred as any other names but their real names. These four people were look down on.  Basically the society in which these people lived in, the four teens were never accepted in. According to the article the teens were referred as “troubled losers”. Also even after they were died they still were being called names. This article relates to the chapter 3 “Culture” because the people who would call these teens’ names would make judgments on them. The reason why they made judgments is because according to the people from the society the teens were different than them. Since the teens would act a different way then what the people thought was desirable, the people felt the need to judge. I could say that I go to college and different places every day and I see people who are totally different then me but that does not give me the right to judge.
Reading chapter 3 “Culture” was very interesting to me since it defined everything that has to do with defining culture and elements of culture. What amazed me more are the two elements of culture.  In the world we live today I could say that there are a lot of people who do believe that having more than one house is better than having a great health. In my life my mom taught me to believe in nonmaterial culture.  Although later when I started to enter the teenage stage I started to see that I enjoyed the physical objects more than my mother’s beliefs. I could say that the reason why my mom is more into the nonmaterial culture is because she was born in Ecuador where you would see a lot of poor people.  Since I was born here in New York I really didn’t see what my mom saw when she was living in Ecuador.
