Reading
chapter 2 and reading the article “Association is not Causation” made me very
open minded to how collecting data is very important. Before I thought that any
person who had a degree can never be wrong when it comes to researching and
gathering data. I believed that if someone conducted a research their results
will be right and wouldn’t be wrong. In chapter 2, it discusses methods of
collecting data the difference between how to collect data depending on what you
are trying to prove. According to chapter 2 “Probably the most commonly used technique
in sociology is the survey” (pg41). This relates to the article because the
article contains evidence from a survey research. The article is about, if alcohol
and drugs are the primary cause of violence. According to the article the
survey they did, men who barely consume alcohol were more violent to men who
did consume it. The survey proves that
drinking alcohol doesn’t automatically make a person violent. By this survey
taking place it shows evidence that the theory can be wrong. In which alcohol
is not to be blame for a person being violent. When I was 17 years old I attended
a party and saw a guy hit his girlfriend, her boyfriend was drunk and I started
to believe the theory that alcohol is the main reason a person becomes aggressive.
Then with time I would see the news and hear more stories and even witness that
not every violent action was done when a human being was intoxicated with
alcohol. I believe alcohol is not to be fully blamed for when a person has a
conflict with violence.
Hey Marilyn :) i read the same article and let me tell you that i totally agree with you. Alcohol should not be a cause to why a person should act violent. I think we are all different when it comes to drinking and because of that we dont all act the same. But then again before i use to believe that yes alcohol was the reason why people acted so aggressive because i saw it a lot in my family. A lot of the man in my family are kind of violent when they get drunk and that also makes me think that it can also be passed down genetically. Bottom line is that we both agree that alcohol is the cause of violence in only some cases not all.
